How to cultivate resilience and be prepared for challenging times.

The world is currently facing massive instability. Understandably, this can lead to many fears: fear of existence, fear of the unknown, fear for one's own health, and that of relatives. The missing contacts with colleagues and friends can only be replaced by digital media to a limited extent. The boundary between work and private life also disappears and the work-life balance has to be readjusted.



How can we become more resilient to meet the challenges?

The thoughts and decisions we make every day determine how resilient we can be when things go wrong.

It is human nature to resist change, especially when it comes in the form of uncontrollable and unexpected challenges. However, change is inevitable. Developing and promoting inner resilience and stability not only helps us to acknowledge change but also to learn and grow from it.


Resilience is the ability to deal with stress and challenges. This inner strength and ability to recover and maintain our ability to function helps us to remain stable even under high stress. It arises from the belief in oneself and at the same time in something greater than oneself.


The good news is; resilience is not a quality that people are born with. It includes behaviors, thoughts, and actions that can be learned, developed, and trained by everyone.


The truth is that no one can give you stability as well as you can. Be the Person and Stability you need!


How do you give yourself the necessary resilience and stability even in challenging times?

12 ways to develop your resilience to be ready when you need your strength most.



1. Personal responsibility.

To have personal responsibility means to acknowledge your own part in critical situations. Make yourself aware that you are to a certain extent responsible for your own situation. In difficult times, resilient people remember that it is their job to create stability within themselves. They are not victims, they actively shape their lives. They examine what they can do to strengthen themselves.



2. Positive inner attitude.

Resilient people cultivate positive or neutral thoughts that help them to keep a positive attitude. They concentrate on the positive things in life. In times of change or crisis, they focus on the positive effects that such situations bring about. Being positive does not mean that you cannot be worried, angry, nervous, or sad. Healthy positivity comes from knowing that you have the ability to acknowledge negative emotions, learn from them, and realize that they too will pass. To have a positive inner attitude means to look at the world, the things, the people, and yourself in a positive way. As long as you do not find any other proof, assume that your counterpart only wants your best and has positive intentions.



3. Reflecting, learning and creating opportunities.

Resilient people do not make the same mistake over and over again. They are willing to acknowledge that certain approaches have not worked. They recognize the complexity of their own experiences, observe their feelings, sort out their thoughts, and can recognize the triggers that come from outside and master them excellently. They take the time for self-reflection to find new ways and strategies out of the difficult situation. They find ways to transform the exhausting feelings or unwanted behavior. As a result, these free time and energy resources can be used more effectively elsewhere. Resilient people learn to perceive themselves as well as their environment more consciously - in this way they can create or discover completely new opportunities.




4. Accepting and growing.

Resilient people concentrate on what they can learn from challenging times and how they could benefit and grow as a result. They become more courageous and resilient over time. Resilient people accept changes and challenges as part of their lives instead of fighting against them. Resilient people can balance their lives well - allowing pain, even drawing strength from a blow of fate, and then returning to their Core even stronger. If we accept that life does not necessarily become easier, we become stronger and more resilient. Resilient people seem to have an invisible power that keeps them going even in crises.

5. Solutions, goals and future.

Resilient people work on the solution of a problem instead of being paralyzed by negative thoughts. They continue to plan for the future, even when things are not going well. Resilient people have clear goals and pursue them. At the same time, they realistically estimate when they have to give up on a goal. They are open to suggestions and move outside of habitual thought processes and patterns. Solution-orientation depends on personal attitudes and expectations for the future and means choosing the option for action that will personally move you forward.






6. Get up as often as necessary.

Resilient people understand that a difficult situation does not mean falling down forever. They get up as often as necessary. They have the ability to adapt successfully. They are courageous to tackle the work within themselves and are happy about the small victories from which they draw strength and stability. Resilience and emotional stability always bring higher self-confidence.

7. Celebrating small victories and practicing gratitude.

Resilient people believe in themselves. They are happy about every step, big or small, that brings them forward. Resilient people can be grateful for every little thing. A good book, the smile of a stranger, a beautiful sunrise, a delicious cup of coffee, or a pleasant phone call can already give us a positive feeling and joy of life.



8. Giving. Further

People are known to be the best medicine for other people. Even in the most difficult times, resistant people find a way to care for others. Because sometimes selflessness is the best way to discover your own strength.



9. Strong relationships.

Resilient people maintain strong and supportive relationships, both personally and professionally. As a result, they have caring, supportive people in times of crisis, who give them support in difficult times.



10. Finding a higher purpose.

Resilient people look for meaning or have already found it. They find a direction in life, discover their personal why, and recognize a holistic context. They view the challenges as part of a larger whole and thus recognize a higher value, perhaps even a higher meaning. The higher meaning helps them to look at setbacks from a holistic perspective.



11. Facing fears.

Resilient people face their fears and have an adaptable attitude that allows them to focus on new opportunities even in the worst of times. Resilient people cope better with frustration and defeat and thus improve steadily instead of sinking into self-pity, victimhood, or self-doubt.


The more difficult the situation, the more stable they become. They remind themselves that much of what they experience is temporary and that they have overcome setbacks before and can do it again.



12. Self-Care.

Resilient people know that stability also includes physical health. They ensure a healthy daily rhythm with a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, relaxation breaks, and physical activity. A healthy, balanced diet and sport not only promotes balance but also ensures the release of happiness hormones. The truth is that no one can give you stability and resilience as you can.

What you need is the resilience and stability that comes from within and is not dependent on anything or anyone. These challenging times require us to focus more on resilience competencies. The ability to maintain focus, self-care, and self-awareness, as well as dealing with one's own emotions, unwanted triggers, and limiting beliefs, balance our stability amidst these distractions & complexities is an imperative life skill.
